IELTS Test

IELTS Test Format

  • Format: There will be four recordings of native English speakers covering the following topics:

Recording 1: A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context (booking a hotel room, making an appointment, giving directions, etc.).

Recording 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context (questions from a campus tour, a speaker describing upcoming acts during a festival, a museum employee explains how an audio guide works, etc.).

Recording 3:A small group conversation, up to four people, set in an educational or training environment (group project work, tutor feedback on an essay, data collection methods for a project, etc.).

Recording 4: A monologue on an academic subject (lecture on Psychology, lecture about climate change, lecture about AI, etc.)

Duration: 30 minutes for listening; 10 minutes for transferring your answers to the answer sheet.

    Number of Questions: 40 questions.

  • Format: You will be given three long texts which could cover a number of topics in a descriptive, factual, or analytical way. They are excerpts from books, journals, etc. and are on an appropriate level for those at the university level (Discovery of a boat from the Bronze Age, The changing role of airports, Is photography art?, etc.).

    Duration: 60 minutes

    Number of questions: 40 questions

Types of questions: Multiple choice questions, match headings to diagrams or charts, fill in gaps of a passage, and indicate if information is true, false, or not given.

  • Format: There are two tasks for the Writing Section covering the following topics:

Task 1: You will be given a chart, diagram, map, or table to analyze. You should write at least 150 words answering the prompt for Task 1 (Analyze a bar graph about the percentage of British people donating to charity and summarize the findings).

Task 2: You will be given a point of view, argument, or a problem that you must write a response for in at least 250 words. This task is worth twice as much as Task 1 and should be the main focus of the writing section (Some people work for the same organization all their working life. Others think that it is better to work for different organizations. Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion).

Duration: 60 minutes for both Task 1 and Task 2. Generally, it is better to spend 40 minutes on Task 2 and 20 minutes on Task 1.

  • Format: There are three sections to the speaking section.

Part 1: Focuses on general introductions. The examiner will introduce themselves and ask you to introduce yourself. The examiner will then ask you general questions related to your home, work, family, studies, interests, etc.

Part 2: The examiner will provide you with a task card to help you talk about a particular topic related to your life. You will get one minute to prepare and then should speak for 90 seconds to 2 minutes on the topic. The examiner could ask you follow up questions after the initial 2 minutes of speaking. (Describe an interesting story you have heard or read about in the news: (1) when you heard or read about the story; (2) what the story was about; (3) why the story was in the news; (4) explain why you found this story interesting)

Part 3: The examiner will ask you further, more abstract questions connected to Part 2. This allows you to discuss the topic more in abstract. (Reading Newspapers: (1) Why do people like to read the newspaper?; (2) How important is it for people to have a choice in newspaper; (3) What does a good newspaper contain? The future of newspapers: (1) Why would someone choose to read the news online as opposed to a newspaper?; (2) How is online news different than news from a newspaper?; (3) Will online news ever replace newspapers?)

Duration: 11-14 minutes. About 4-5 minutes for Part 1; 2-3 minutes for Part 2; and 5-6 minutes for Part 3

    38-37 / 8.5

    36-35 / 8

  • The scoring for the Writing Section is assessed based on four criteria. These four criteria are as follows: Task Achievement; Coherence & Cohesion; Lexical Resource; and Grammar Range & Accuracy. Each of these subsections is weighted at 25% of each Task’s score. Please note: Task 2 is worth twice as many points as Task 1. Therefore, your writing section score will be calculated as follows:

    • Task 1: 5.5

    • Task 2: 7

Your overall Writing Section score would be calculated as follows: (5.5+ 7*2)/3 = 6.5 = IELTS band score of a 6.5

Four criteria for the Writing Section:

Task Achievement (25%): This criteria focuses on how accurately you execute the task itself. For example, do you provide an overview, address the question being asked, present information accurately, support your detail with data or anecdotes, and give a clear position?

Coherence & Cohesion (25%):This criteria focuses on how you organize the information in your response. Do you have an introduction paragraph with a roadmap for the rest of the response, have one central idea per paragraph, use linking devices and connectors, and organize information in a digestible and easy to read manner?

Lexical Resource (25%):This criteria focuses on your word choice and spelling. Do you use a good range of vocabulary that fits the prompt, spell words correctly, paraphrase effectively, or use collocations in your response?

Grammar Range & Accuracy (25%): This criteria focuses on the accuracy of the grammar in your response. Do you have run-on sentences, do you use a mix of sentence structures, do you use different grammar tenses correctly, do you use current punctuation, and overall do you avoid grammatical errors?

Example expectations for an IELTS Band 7 Score for Task 2:

Task Achievement: The main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed, and the position of the writer is clearly presented. The main ideas are supported but there is an over generalization or lack of focus on some of the ideas.

Coherence & Cohesion: The information and ideas are logically organized, and there is a clear progression through the response. Paraphrasing is generally used effectively to support overall coherence, and the order of paragraphs is generally logical.

Lexical Resource: An awareness of style and collocation is evident, however, sometimes not in a natural way. There are only a few spelling errors and they do not detract from the overall clarity of the response.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy: A variety of complex sentence structures are implemented. Grammar and punctuation errors can occur, however, a large majority of the sentences are error-free. No errors should impede the readability of the response.

  • The Speaking Section is scored based on your overall speaking performance, not necessarily based on your performance for one particular section. It is graded based on the following four criteria:

Fluency (25%): Fluency is defined as talking for the appropriate amount of time for each question, talking with minimal hesitation, talking without self correction, and using linking devices to connect your thoughts and ideas.

Lexical Resource (25%): Lexical Resource is defined as being able to use a range of words and paraphrasing, use collocations, use less common vocabulary, and avoid as many errors as possible in word choice.

Grammar Range & Accuracy (25%): Grammar Range is best measured by your ability to use a range of verb tenses, a variety of sentence structures, and to avoid grammatical errors with word order, prepositions, and incorrect verb conjugations being the most common errors.

Pronunciation (25%): Pronunciation is different from accent. Sometimes an accent can negatively impact pronunciation, but generally the two are separate. Pronunciation simply means speaking clearly and understandably, pronouncing words accurately, correct use of stress and intonation when speaking, and minimal distraction based on your accent.

IELTS Band Scoring

How is the IELTS Test scored?

Your IELTS score will consist of your four, equally weighted subsection scores. IELTS Band Scores are on a scale from 0 to 9 with intervals of 0.5. IELTS will round your score to the nearest whole or 0.5 number based on the results of your four sections as shown in the following example:

  • Listening: 7

  • Reading: 6

  • Writing: 6.5

  • Speaking: 7.5

Your overall IELTS Band score would then be calculated as follows: (7+6+6.5+7.5)/4 = 6.75

In the event that your score is perfectly between a 0.5 and a whole number, IELTS will round your score up. In this example, the student would receive an overall IELTS Band Score of 7.
